We are delighted to announce the appointment of Anja Mahler as Digital Archivist for the Atlantic Philanthropies Archive Project, based at the Digital Repository of Ireland at the Royal Irish Academy. This recently-announced venture involves the creation of a digital archive of select research collections about the foundation’s approaches, and the impact of grantees’s work across Ireland. The digital archive will be preserved for persistent access and builds upon Atlantic Philanthropies’ complete paper and electronic records spanning 35 years of grant making in eight regions, which are housed at Cornell University Library in Ithaca, New York. DRI’s role is part of a larger ‘Active Curation’ project supported by Atlantic Philanthropies to encourage the development of philanthropy for social change, particularly for disadvantaged or vulnerable people. Partners include Cornell University Library, Bridgespan Group, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, and Fast Company.

Anja Mahler is an experienced digital archivist with a background in cultural heritage and an in-depth understanding of the history, conservation, preservation, restoration and access of moving image.  She is an advocate for best practice in collections management, specifically collection development, care and documentation.  Her focus for this project is on developing guidelines, collection structures, ingest schedules and metadata policies for the project, as well as for the hands-on creation of metadata and ingestion of digital objects into the DRI. She will work closely with the Project Lead, Dr Caroline McGee, to prepare the Atlantic Philanthropies archive collections for online publication on a rolling basis between 2018 and 2020.

DRI is funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) via the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and the Irish Research Council (IRC).
